Although most of Derek's time and passion is now focused on the pursuit of untracked snow in remote locations – with back-to-back winters in the Southern Alps of New Zealand, Colorado and Japanese backcountry – in his other lives has also been a sought-after fly fishing guide and a popular travel writer. For over two decades, he has written about outdoor adventures and natural history for some of the world's most prestigious magazines, like the Smithsonian, Australian Geographic and New Zealand Geographic. He is the author of six books, including globally acclaimed Trout Trilogy, about fly fishing in New Zealand and the US, which has become a classic in its genre.
Derek brings to the team cool-headed maturity, decades of mountaineering and backcountry skiing experience, and a sense for always finding the best snow. He considers shapes and placement of ski lines a form of art and if you spend more than 10 minutes with him, he'd probably talk you into trying kite skiing, his latest favourite pursuit.
